Who are we ?

Constellations ASBL – An association committed to inclusive housing for people with intellectual disabilities in Brussels

Our history

Founded in 2001 by a group of parents concerned about their children’s future, Constellations ASBL was born out of a deep concern: the long waiting lists for young adults with intellectual disabilities (21 and over) in Brussels.

Some families were facing waiting times of up to 10 years to access a place in a care facility.

👉 Faced with this reality, our mission became clear: to create inclusive and adapted living spaces that provide people with disabilities a dignified, safe, and fulfilling environment.

How we work

Constellations operates with a small but highly dedicated team:

  • 1.5 full-time equivalents (one full-time project coordinator and one part-time administrative assistant).
  • Salaries are financed at 95% by the Brussels Region.

  • A full-time volunteer supports the team.

  • A volunteer Board of Directors provides expertise and governance.

Since March 2026, we have strengthened our team by appointing a new Executive Director. She will help us explore the possibility of expanding our activities into Flanders, as well as providing invaluable support in managing all our projects and continuing to grow and sustain the work of Constellations. This position is funded by a grant from the King Baudouin Foundation and a donation from a private individual.

The Board of Directors is made up of:

  • Committed parents,
  • Experts and professionals from the social and healthcare sectors,

  • Scientific representatives from both language communities (French- and Dutch-speaking).

An efficient non-profit model

Thanks to the involvement of our volunteers and strict financial management, we keep our operating costs very low:

 around 10%

👉 This ensures that every donation directly contributes to the creation of new care places and the support of inclusive projects.

Our commitment

In practice, Constellations works to:

  • Build and support care homes for young adults, children with multiple disabilities, and elderly people with disabilities.

  • Address the urgent need for inclusion in the Brussels-Capital Region.

  • Support families by offering concrete and sustainable solutions.

  • Develop partnerships with other associations to maximize impact.
